Retired and looking for a hobby I settled on old valve radios. Now all I have to do is figure out how they work.
Field Coil Rewind for Don's Columbus model 90 Radio.
Don from Don's Old Radio Shed UA-cam channel reached out to me to help with with a open circuit speaker field coil from a New Zealand made Columbus model 90 radio. I was happy to help and offered to rewind it for him. I have returned the coil to him and he will fit it and test it. This video shows how I rewound it. Pop over to Don's channel to see if the rewind was successful. A link to Don's channel is below.

Edit: I now know the radio was from 1940 not 1947 as I thought. Sorry for the misinformation. While visiting Sydney recently, my friend rang me and said he had an old Astor radio he had worked on but couldn't get it to work properly. I picked it up and brought it back to Queensland. This has been heavily worked on by a number of people, that rings alarm bells! That alone makes it the worst kind...

I thought you said STD and I'm not talking about interstate phone calls either! xxx Why are all the brilliant guys straight? I need a husband too you know????
Excellent job Dave, more things to learn..Thanks for sharing your immense knowledge..Hope you're keeping well..😅 Ed..uk
Прекрасная работа. Подписался. Лайк!
Its a masterpiece to me Mr Tipton.
What a pro you are doing this job for a friend like Don. Just two amazing guys on a great collab.
Very nice rewind video David, I LOVE your rewinder tool! That is so nice!
3XY. Where the wrinklies fly. Now I know I'm 63. I love valve driven gear. I own a Primaluna HP integrated amp. 6 12AU7s pre. 8 EL34s post. It sounds delicious.
Hi Andrew, I think you will find it was 3AK where no wrinklies fly. I can't remember what 3XY's catch phrase was. Wow... that is a lot of valves 😱 You won't need a heater with that running 😄
@@DavidTipton101 It was a while back...like 1975. No FM, no Dance music but boy we had it good. This current generation are pathetic. I was a gay club DJ for many years and now we have nothing except bailed morons. The quality of your work is the best I've seen...period. I also did night school to study audio visual engineering. I should have gone to tech school after year 12 but mum wanted me to be a "something". I am very much like you. If a friend wants me to look at their gear, after the first look I say "I've gotta rewire the whole lot". I do it properly and they can't believe it's the same system. I was very popular in Bali in the 80s. They're sound gear was abysmil and no earth or RCDs....SCARY. One shop I went into in Bali to buy cassettes, had pretty good equipment but sounded bad. I said to the owner that I could fix it. After about an hour I needed RCA leads. His mate came back with the leads and after a bloody good clean, I fired it up and it was chalk and cheese. They offered me money etc but I said "hows about you buy me some spaghetti and a can of Southern Comfort". All of his friends started rocking up to listen to his gear and were stunned. It ended up a party and after i said watch the volume, they gave me a lift back to my resort. They get excited easily but along Kuta Beach road now, the western cancer has taken over. McDonalds KFC Burger King etc. At 63 a 7 hour flight is all I can cope with now. Cheers Andrew Collins Mebourne.
Hope that the Enamelled Copper wire doesn't break.
It didn't 🙂
Nice one Dave! It worked well enough. I remember we emailed a bit at the time you had my Loewe Opta Meteor power transformer to rewind and you went the whole hog in buying this winding equipment. I hope you get some more interesting jobs to complete with the winder. Thanks for sharing! Cheers! Peter😊
Hello Peter, thank you. The winder has been worth the money, even if only for convenience sake 👍🙂
Great Video Dave, short and sweet. Great video.
Thanks Stephen 🙂
Such a cool machine David. You make it look easy. Thanks for sharing. 73 de KB7ICI.....Bill.
Thank you Bill 😊
Dave, the coil master .....
Thanks Chris 😄
You are the official coil whisperer. I watched Don's 1st episode of that radio and figured he would be sending that field coil to you. It's great to see fellow radio restorers helping each other out. Another great video as usual.
Thanks Ian. Don's a great bloke, I have no hesitation helping him as he has for me in the past 🙂
Hello dave I have been looking into setting up a coil winding machine have been finding more and more of a need for one !
Very handy Richard, a second hand one would be perfect, if you can find one. I couldn't 😕
14,000 turns, 1,400 ohms, so multiply or divide to get one or the other, so would that work as a rough guestimate for most field coils?
Thanks Dan, yeah, it might give a ball park. If the wire is right it would be close 🙂
David I like your approach to making some thing work again thanks for the video
Thanks Sheldon 🙂
Where did the machine come from? Aliexpress?
Yes, I think it was 🙂
Nice work David!
Thank you William 🙂
Hello David. Quite enjoyed your video on re winding the speaker coil. Hope it worked. Take care Derrick.
Thanks Derrick, it did! 🙂
hi David....that field coil re-wind was a perfect job for the World Famous Buzz Winder! 🍺🍺
Hi Buzz... I know... but L'll have to settle with my winder, I hope to upgrade to a Buzz Winder™ one day but things are tight at the moment, it will have to wait 😢🍻
Nice work, very clean. Most people don't understand if a radio uses a field winding, you can't replace with pm speaker unless you put a choke where the field winding was.
Yes, a choke or a resistor will do it. Thanks Fred 👍🙂
Very impressive! Thanks for the video.
Thank you ladamurni 😊
Great, now I finally know what Don's shed actually looks like.
Haha... it looks much better now he has fixed it up a bit 😄
Great job Dave!! Is there anything that you can not fix.😉
Thank you Jan. I am hopeless at knitting 😊
Nice work David sir thank you so much for the sharing this video sir 👍 😊❤❤
Thank you Nath 🙂
Just finished both videos and it was so pleasing to see this collaboration on YT within our radio community, it was great team work for sure. 2 thumbs up for both of you. Seeing the re-winding go so smoothly was immensely satisfying so was the moment Don got sound from his bench speaker. I'm happy for both of you and never had any doubts you could pull this off Dave. Thank's for sharing. I'm off to re-string a Marantz receiver now and i'll try to shoot some footage to help others sometimes struggling with this part. Have a great day mate.
Hello Raymond, thank you. There is quite a bit of collaboration between creators and the subscribers, it's very pleasing to be a part of it. Good luck with your restring 👍🙂
Your winding rig seems to work really well. Very smooth!
It does, thanks Shannon 🙂
Another quality repair Dave.. Nice Work!! Hopefully will see you Sunday!!!
Thanks Chris, I should be there 👍🙂
Brills mate!
Thank you MrGunn 😊
I believe you have done these by hand before. Hey, Mate.
I started out doing them by hand but this is much easier and neater. Thanks clasicradiolover 🙂
Insightful and valuable information as always DT. Just hope Don appreciates it 🤪
Thanks Danny. Don was very happy to get this coil back and working 👍😊
Another wonderful adventure !!
Thank you Craig 🙂
Another enjoyable video Dave. *****
Thanks Mick 😊
Getting your coil winder set up to keep the wire smooth and flat reminds me of getting my Webster-Chicago wire recorder properly adjusted to wind the wire smoothly onto the takeup spool and have it lie flat without tangling. And then after having listened to whatever had been recorded on the wire, I have to wind the wire back onto the supply spool without breaking or tangling it...always a bit nerve-wracking. Here you don't have to worry about transferring it back and forth between spools. Nice repair!
Thanks Joseph. I don't have a wire recorder but my friend does and he explained the difficulty involved to keep it all aligned. They work amazingly well though, I was surprised 🙂
Nice job!
Thank you Michael 🙂
After you get more experience you will realize the number of turns and DC resistance is ridiculously inconsequential. You can simply use wire close to the same size and fill the form with wire. It will work fine without all the hassle. The number of turns and resistance will be easily close enough to what the original was to work fine.
Hello glasslinger. Yes, thank you, I am being too anal with this and you are right. I will still measure and calculate things out because that's in my nature but I won't worry as much with the result. Thanks for your help 🙂
Brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing your skill and expertise.
Thank you Patrick 😊
Hi Dave , you know what will happen now? Jobs from all over the world hahaha. Many thanks from UK.
I know 😄 Thanks Chris.
Great job on that coil.
Thank you Ripley 👍😊
Great job, a real (reel) wind up on Don's shed, which looks better than I remember from last time it was shown on his channel.😆 Which wing of your mansion do you work in on your radio restorations in David? I couldn't tell from Don's video. 😉
Hello Radio-Ged, Don has been doing some renos on his shed 😄 My work room is on the top floor, you can see the light on in Don's video 😊
Dave, if you're not careful you're going to receive rewind requests from the entire restoration community. Your wife's gift is impressive if I were in your shoes I do the dishes once in a while as a Thank You. Great video
I know Mack, I need to keep a low profile 😕 She is a good egg Mack, hopefully I can cut back to doing the dishes only once in a while 🙂
Wow, quick and easy. That's the way it should be. can you tell us more about your coil winding machine? Make / Model?
Thanks @a1wireless1964. It's a Chinese machine, the model number is LY 810 or similar, there are a few model numbers with small differences. I showed more of the machine in previous videos 🙂
A great looking radio, but those "piano" operated switches! Wrestling in the US has a word: "kayfabe". I also like the weight in the tuning mechanism to give good "knob feel"; yes, that is what the American audiophiles call it, but us Brits know that it means... [Continued page 94] {ref. Private Eye Magazine}
Hi Sub, the switches are a weak point in European radios, OK when new but unreliable after all these years. I insist on having great knob feel 👍🙂
Always interesting to watch coil winding, David. For some radios so it is an integral part of the radios repair. Many old radio sets get scraped because the repairer is unable to rewind a burnt-out IF coil, transformer or speaker coil. As you show, David, with a bit of patience, all can learn to repair/rewind coils.
Absolutely Theo, I was having this problem all the time so I needed to work out how to rewind coils. It has worked out so far 🙂
As usual Mr Tipton saves the day, thanks for the video David allways a pleasure.
Thank you Antony 😊
Nice work, Dave. Your getting good at these coil windings. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Brian. I hope so, there is still room for improvement 👍🙂
David you make it look easy! Cheers!
Thanks James 🙂
Hi Dave Excellent job on that coil looked real professional. I usually watch Don's chanel look forward to his next video.
Thanks Alun 🙂
Way over my paygrade. Good job.
Haha... thanks Phil 😊
